Hello fellow BSSC members!
My name is Cameron Good and Mike Cray has placed me in charge of organizing a team to run in the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Last year we had over 45 runners join us and were able to raise nearly $7,000 for breast cancer research. This year we are hoping to break the $10,000 mark! This year the race is rcheduled for Sunday, October 19th in Hunt Valley. I realize it is a long way off, but we want to start recruiting early. Last year the race was a little chaotic due to parking and traffic, but don't worry, they have made drastic changes to prevent that from happening again!
The race is for both men and women of all ages and we encourage everyone to participate. Men, this is a wonderful opportunity to show your care and support for breasts everywhere! To show his appreciation, Mike has generously agreed to provide custom BSSC running shirts for everyone that signs up under our team. Last year they were a big hit at the Race and helped us to identify fellow runners. In fact, you can check out the pictures from last year's race in the photos section of the BSSC web page!
http://baltssc.com/photos.asp?divisionID=109
Here's what you do to sign up:
First go the following URL (http://2008rftc.kintera.org) and click on "Register Here." From there you will "agree" to the photo waiver and then select "Join A Team." From the list provided, select "BSSC for Boobies" and fill in all of your personal info. When you come down to payment, select the "Team Registration Mail." If you have friends or family who would like to pledge money to the Komen Foundation under your name, they can easily do so. Just direct them to the home page listed above and have them select "Sponsor Participant." Next they just enter your name and can pledge whatever amount they wish. The pledge shows up under your name on our team page, so you will be credited for bringing in the money.
Please e-mail Cameron at bsscforboobies@gmail.com with your BSSC shirt size or if you have any questions.
This is a great way to get together with your friends and raise money for a good cause, while also meeting many new BSSC members. I hope you can join us!
Sincerely,
Cameron Good and Mike Cray

NEW MILLER LITE CRAFT-STYLE LIGHT BEERS AVAIALBE AT YOUR BSSC SPONSOR BARS
More than 30 years ago, Miller Brewing Company successfully introduced a revolutionary new product named Miller Lite that delivered the ultimate combination of taste and refreshment. Miller Lite established an entirely new segment – low-calorie – within the U.S. beer category, and it’s now the largest category in the industry.
Now Miller Lite is looking to do it again, testing Miller Lite Brewers Collection – a triumvirate of craft-style light beers. Miller Lite Brewers Collection Amber, Miller Lite Brewers Collection Wheat and Miller Lite Brewers Collection Blonde Ale each have significantly fewer calories and carbs than a typical beer of that style. Each style has 110 calories and 6.2 grams of carbs per 12-ounce serving.
It will be tested in four markets – Baltimore, Charlotte, Minneapolis and San Diego.
With the tag line of “Craft Beer. Done Lite,” Miller Lite Brewers Collection offers real craft beer taste and true light beer refreshment. The trio does what Miller Lite did when it was first introduced – it offers the best of both worlds for today’s beer drinkers who want a more complex and flavorful beer without sacrificing the refreshment and drinkability to which they’ve grown accustomed.
Each Miller Lite Brewers Collection style features a unique taste profile true to that particular category, but with more drinkability than the typical craft brand. Miller selected three styles that are especially popular among beer drinkers looking to experiment with crafts.
• Miller Lite Brewers Collection Amber is malty, hoppy and bold, flavorful yet refreshing.
• Miller Lite Brewers Collection Wheat offers especially appealing flavor dimensions, with a subtle citrus note that kicks in during the finish.
• Miller Lite Brewers Collection Blonde Ale offers a crispness and slight maltiness that’s balanced by a higher level of sweetness. |

Mike Cray of BSSC (Credit: Robert Jacobs)

Clearly, Mike Cray speaks Metromix. The first thing he said (after hello, of
course) was, "Want a beer?" Beer, as it happens, is a lingua franca of
sorts, bringing all manner of people together. And beer happens to be one
thing Cray knows plenty about, which supplements a robust knowledge of
sports and people, as well. As the owner and founder of Baltimore Sports and
Social Club, they're his raison d'etre.
The BSSC is a collection of like-minded Baltimoreans whose love of athletics
is exceeded only by their desire to meet people and have fun. It provides
year-round opportunities to play standard team sports like football
(fall/spring), softball (summer) and volleyball (winter/summer) as well as
quirkier games like kickball, dodgeball (fall), whiffleball (fall)
and—everyone's favorite autumnal sport—broomball.
A former construction contractor, Cray formed the BSSC in the fall of 1998
after a lifetime of playing sports. He loved to socialize and thought the
group would be a great way to bring people together. In the decade since its
inception, the BSSC has grown from a few hundred participants to nearly
10,000. "Sports instantly breaks down barriers," says Cray. "You go to the
bar after the game and you see Greg from the red team. You might not know
his last name, but you know he plays for the red team and that he made a
great play. You immediately have a connection."
Speaking of connections, according to Cray, more than 50 people have met and
married through the BSSC. This probably has as much to do with the club's
co-ed policy as with its open container policy. (Touch football has never
been so much fun!) And if the idea of playing team sports brings back
traumatic memories of being picked last in gym class, fear not—everybody
plays in the BSSC. For instance, one rule in touch football is that every
third play goes to a girl. Not only does this encourage team involvement,
but girls are more fun to chase and generally smell better than male
receivers. To ensure each athlete finds his niche, leagues within the BSSC
are separated by skill level. Having a choice between the Social (advanced
athletic skills), Extreme Social (intermediate athletic skills) and Super
Extreme Social (basic athletic skills) leagues allows everyone to compete on
a level playing field. But competition isn't the focus here. "We're here to
make new friends and have fun," says Cray.
And what better way to make new friends than to drink copious amounts of
alcohol with strangers! Yes, teammates, happy hour plays an important role
in the BSSC social calendar—as do Orioles games, tailgating, Ravens road
trips, Preakness infield parties, fundraisers and charity events. Each new
season kicks off with a big happy hour and every game is immediately
followed by a gathering at one of the BSSC's official watering holes.
Sponsors like Camden Pub, Looney's and Miller Lite are an essential part of
the BSSC, since they keep costs down (for equipment, uniforms and referees)
and keep the beer cheap and flowing.
The recent BSSC/Miller Lite-sponsored street festival is a prime example of
the kind of fun this organization has to offer. Jubilant members swarmed the
BSSC beer van for some good ol' Baltimore summertime fun. At the block
party, a young BSSC member with a beery smile and a Red Sox jersey wandered
over. Turns out Jimmy Starkey is a recent transplant to the Baltimore area
(which explained the Red Sox paraphernalia). "BSSC is a great way to meet
people," he said. "When I moved here, I didn't know anybody. Now I have all
these friends."

The BSSC is the ONLY sports & social club in
MARYLAND to have an affiliation with MedStar SportsHeath.
What is MedStar SportsHealth and how can it help me as a member of the
BSSC?
The BSSC provides various sports and recreational activities that often require
people to move; and when people move, they can get hurt or injured. Should this
occur, the BSSC has entered into an agreement with MedStar SportsHealth to
provide prompt medical care (for its members) at any one of the four
Baltimore-area MedStar hospitals. These hospitals include
Franklin Square, Good Samaritan, Harbor and Union
Memorial.
As a member of BSSC, you have access to a MedStar SportsHealth identification
card. Should an injury occur, simply present this ID card to the Emergency Room
registrar, and their staff of sports medicine specialists will help to get you
back in the game again!
MedStar SportsHealth
MedStar SportsHealth is not an insurance company, nor will it ever try to sell
you something. As part of MedStar Health, a non-profit, community-based health
care organization serving the Baltimore/Washington region with over 4600
affiliated physicians, MedStar SportsHealth provides the largest network of
sports medicine experts in the area. In fact, Medstar SportsHealth provides
medical care for the Baltimore Ravens, Washington
Nationals, Baltimore Blast, Georgetown Hoyas, UMBC Retrievers, Morgan State
Bears, the Community Colleges of Dundalk, Harford, Howard, Essex & Catonsville,
Goucher College Gophers, Loyola Greyhounds and organizations like the Cirque de
Soliel, the Volvo World Ocean Races, the NBA, the PGA & the NHL.
In addition to providing prompt care for BSSC members when
they are injured, MedStar SportsHealth provides low cost health enhancement
services for members of BSSC as well. These include:
Health screenings for: Cholesterol & blood lipids, Blood pressure, Diabetes,
Prostate Cancer
Vaccinations for: Flu, Hepatitis B
As a BSSC member… how do you get a MedStar SportsHealth I.D. card?
All members are given one if they need to go to a MedStar Hospital Emergency
Room for a BSSC sports-related injury.
If you are not injured and want to receive a card, or you have a question
regarding the services provided to BSSC members by MedStar SportsHealth, call
Kim @ 410-772-6516.

Tony & Alysia are members who met while playing in the BSSC, got engaged and
were married. I was invited to their wedding along with other friends they had
made through the BSSC.
On May 31st 2005 they had their first baby, Grace. Around four months of age
their baby was diagnosed with a fatal and untreatable disease called Krabbe
disease. Krabbe disease is a rare disorder leading to degeneration of the
nervous system and occurs in about 1 in 100,000 births worldwide. Affected
families have a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with the disease. It is caused
by the shortage of an enzyme called galactosylceramidase (GALC), which leads to
a progressive loss of myelin that covers many nerves. Without myelin, nerves in
the brain and other parts of the body cannot function properly.
On Saturday, June 3rd,2006 Grace lost her battle with this disease.
Part of a letter I recieved:
Tony & Alysia
We have felt helpless for so long as we know many of you have. To celebrate and
honor Grace’s life, we have created a fund in her name. Sweet Baby Grace Fund
will be used to help with Grace Care and support research. We hope that in
Grace’s memory, a cure can be found so that other families can see their babies
survive this horrible disease.
Contributions to Sweet Baby Grace Fund can be sent to
Carrollton Bank, PO Box 24129,
White Marsh Branch
Baltimore, Maryland 21227-9928.
The BSSC charity football game in December will now split proceeds
between Santa Claus Anonymous and Sweet Baby Grace Fund.
ALL "no ref" fines for football will now go to the Sweet
Baby Grace Fund.

Heading for Maryland? Baltimore has its charms
Dan Rodricks
August 2, 2007
Hello from area code 410. While you're stressing about the move and trying to
decide on a place to live, here are 100 reasons to consider the City of
Baltimore:
1. We have lots of room. Population was 950,000 in 1950. It's about 635,000
today.
33. There's fun in Patterson Park with the
Baltimore Sports Social Club (if you're single, and even if you're not).
2. There's new energy in this city, and we need new citizens to keep the
momentum.
3. You'll feel wanted.
4. Friends from the suburbs will consider you urbane.
5. We have oodles of rowhouses waiting for new owners, new paint, new decks.
6. Save on gas. Walk to the supermarket or the dry cleaner.
7. Keep in shape. Walk to the supermarket or the dry cleaner.
8. Bump into friends as you walk to the supermarket or dry cleaner.
9. You're not that far from Washington, assuming you consider that a plus.
10. Not that far from Philly, either.
11. We have trains that can get you to the Fort Meade area or Aberdeen.
12. We have light rail.
13. Matthew's Pizza is as fine as any you've had in your life.
14. The Orioles are going into a long, happy winning cycle.
15. If you're from New Jersey, you'll finally have a decent NFL team to cheer
for.
16. The Army-Navy game is coming downtown again (Dec. 1).
17. Two farmers' markets per weekend, almost all year.
18. Great hospitals: If you're going to get sick, this is the place to do it,
baby.
19. If you're not a drug dealer or a gangsta, your chances of being a
violent-crime victim are low. (If you're in the military, and you don't want to
live in Baltimore because you think it's dangerous, you probably shouldn't be in
the military either.)
20. We have curbside recyling.
21. Dental hygienists call you "Hon."
22. Pink flamingos are sacred.
23. Snow panic at local supermarkets -- cheapest entertainment in the East.
24. It'll still take a while, but the public schools will become the pride of
the city again.
25. We're going to have a smoking ban.
26. You can expose your kids to lacrosse, a sport they might not otherwise play.
27. You won't find Gebco Girls commercials anywhere else.
28. We have a good public water supply -- better than the bottled stuff.
29. Supermarket chains are actually opening new stores here.
30. In the next five years, we'll have a new arena.
31. You can engage in high-quality people-watching at the Canton Safeway.
32. Ditto Harborplace.
34. We have New York-quality (but not priced) Jewish delis on Corned Beef Row,
and Attman's is expanding.
35. Move here and you get the sushi buffet at New No Da Ji.
36. The view from Federal Hill.
37. The whole Homewood Hopkins scene.
38. The Walters Art Museum -- and it's free.
39. Lunchtime music at Lexington Market.
40. Flowers, fish and fruit at Cross Street.
41. Fort McHenry picnics.
42. J. Patrick's Irish Pub.
43. Sophie's crepes on a cold night at the Charles.
44. Halloween in Fells Point.
45. Christmas in Hampden.
46. The Flower Mart.
47. Tulip time in Guilford.
48. Duckpins, still bowled here.
49. Great trout fishing, 30 minutes away.
50. The Preakness.
51. The Senator.
52. The BMA.
53. Great Blacks in Wax.
54. Noontime concerts at Old St. Paul's.
